Exhaust systems, like intakes, unleash power in your engine by
helping it breathe more efficiently. They range in sound from
"stock sound" to "utterly obnoxious", but this is subjective.
A basic, budget-minded aftermarket exhaust system will replace
all components from the catalytic converter back. Commonly
referred to as "cat-back" for that reason. This replacement
may or may not eliminate the factory resonator, depending on the
manufacturer.
A more aggressive approach is to replace the downpipe, catalytic
converter, and everything back with high-flow components. High
flow can mean anything from 2.25 inches in diameter to 3 inches
or more, depending again on the specific manufacturer.
A very common approach to tuning is to add an intake, chip, and
cat-back exhaust. While this will not unleash all available power,
it keeps the engine mostly stock, and it will only cost in the neighborhood
of $1200 total.
